In recognition of Earth Day 2010, Berkeley Community Pride coordinated a successful project in 17 public and private schools in Berkeley County.  Brown, paper grocery bags were generously provided by the Weis and Martin’s supermarkets.   Almost 4800 students decorated the grocery bags with colorful environmental messages reminding the community to preserve our natural resources.  The stores then displayed and distributed the bags to their customers during April.

Berkeley Community Pride presented each participating school with a check for $100 to be used at the teacher’s discretion for curriculum materials or supplies.  The money for this project was provided in part from the community recycling project held every other month by BCP  and the remainder from a grant from the Windhover foundation.  Administration of the project was greatly facilitated with the assistance of Leah Catlett of the Berkeley County Schools.  Berkeley Community Pride had 35 volunteers who helped place labels on each bag and also pick up and deliver the bags to the various schools.

Please  support these students by being responsible – don’t litter, and always try to recycle, reuse, and reduce use!
