Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority
Recycling of Automotive and Household Batteries
PRESS RELEASE
The Berkeley County Solid Waste
Authority (BCSWA) is pleased to announce the addition of automotive and
household battery recycling to the Berkeley County Recycling Program .
Effective immediately, the Grapevine Road Recycling Center and the South
Berkeley Recycling Center will accept automotive, lawn tractor, rechargeable and
dry cell batteries for recycling. Batteries will not be accepted at the
Hedgesville or Marlowe Recycling Centers. The BCSWA reserves the right to reject
any item not considered acceptable by staff.
Battery recycling protects our environment from heavy metal contamination. Used
batteries that are generated by households in small quantities are in most cases
considered hazardous waste. Most "household" batteries contain mercury, silver,
lead, chromium, and/or cadmium. Dry cell batteries contribute about 88 percent
of the total mercury and 50 percent of the cadmium in the municipal solid waste
stream. In the past, batteries accounted for nearly half of the mercury used in
the United States and over half of the mercury and cadmium in the municipal
solid waste stream.
Acceptable automotive or household rechargeable batteries include: Lead
AcidNickel Cadmium (NiCad)Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)Lithium Ion (Li-ion)Small
Sealed Lead (Pb) Follow this simple rule, If it's rechargeable, its recyclable.
In addition, various types of acceptable household dry cell batteries
include:alkalinenickel cadmiumnickel metal hydrideiron carbon zincsilver AAAAA C

The Berkeley County Recycling Program is operated by the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority under the guidance of the Berkeley County Recycling Plan. It was developed as an effort to conserve landfill space and to continue the gradual implementation of the West Virginia Recycling Act. The recycling center is co-funded by the Berkeley County Commission and the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority.
