Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority

Recycling of Air Conditoners

PRESS RELEASE

The Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority (BCSWA) is pleased to announce the continuation of the sixth annual appliance and freon unit recycling event.

From May 1st to May 31st, the South Berkeley Recycling Center and the Grapevine Road Recycling Center will accept, free of charge, all metal household appliances.
Example of such units are dryers, washers and hot water heaters.

This event also includes units that contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFC). CFC’s are an ozone layer depleting material unique to certain consumer grade items containing cooling elements and is commonly referred to as "freon". Examples of household items containing freon include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers. These units are not accepted for disposal at the area landfills and unfortunately are common place in roadside dumps. US-EPA Federal rules prohibit the discharge of freon into the atmosphere.

Metal appliances of any age, manufacture or condition will be accepted.

The South Berkeley Recycling Center and the Grapevine Road Recycling Center days of operation are every Monday thru Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.

To qualify for acceptance, the units must have all foreign items such as food waste removed. A good rule of thumb is to return the unit to the same state in which it was purchased. Each unit will be inspected by the recycling center staff prior to acceptance and the BCSWA reserves the right to reject any unit not considered acceptable by staff.

This event is a cooperative effort between the BCSWA, Zuckerman's, Hummer Enterprise, Berkeley County Commission and the WV-PPOD (Pollution, Prevention and Open Dump) Program. The Berkeley County Recycling Program operates under the guidance of the Berkeley County Recycling Ordinance and was developed as an effort to conserve landfill space and to continue the gradual implementation of the West Virginia Recycling Act. The recycling program is co-funded by the Berkeley County Commission and the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority.
